What is sustainable lighting?
A sustainable design means not only considering the amount of wattage that a fixture consumes, but also paying attention to the life cycle of the products selected. Most architects are content to specify the latest in LED technology knowing that they have a 5 year warranty, plus save a considerable amount of electricity. This is great! But the lighting designer can also consider what happens in 5 to 10 years when a few of the fixtures have started to go dark. Can it be serviced or does it need to be replaced entirely? The answer can be very expensive and should be considered at time of purchase.. Without consulting a lighting designer, few are prepared to answer this with any confidence. It is not just about consumption, it's about the life cycle too.
LED Recessed
Downlights are one of the most powerful tools in the lighting design arsenal, and growing stronger every year. Most quality manufacturers will be able to send documentation detailing how to service their fixtures and should offer a replacement part for both drivers and LEDs. Alternatively, if beam control and cutoff are less of a concern and a larger profile is acceptable, recessed down-lights that utilize directional LED lamps can be specified so that new replacement lamps can be installed down the road. Whatever the design criteria, it is best to consult with a lighting designer who will know a range of options, and be able to assist with selection of color temperature and lumen package.
Linear Illumination
LED Tape and neon are among the most exciting developments of the lighting revolution. A dimmable line of light can now be added to the smallest of reveals, grazing a surface to create drama and illusion. Unfortunately, product life cycle and quality control have been an industry wide issue, further complicated by risks due to environmental factors such as water or heat. Additionally, product replacement is often difficult and expensive due to location and access. For these reason it is important to consider a tape that is modular and can be installed and repaired in segments from a reputable manufacturer. A lighting designer can help you identify which products to use and how to dim them.
LED Lamps
Advancements in LED lamps have collided with the artistic attention to detail of the past with some awe inspiring results. The warm glow of an old time Edison lamp is now easy to replicate with LED. In the realm of display. Directional lamps that deliver superior color rending are now becoming the new normal as well. Lamps that change color or color temperature are even available, but their simplicity must be like that of a switch before we see them become popular. The biggest issues are that of control, flicker, and dimming. These will rarely dim to 1%, and low levels are an issue. Once again, it is always important to consult a lighting designer to help ensure compatibility and performance.
